Revenge // retribution vs compassion // forgiveness “Let’s make magic. And let’s shove it down the throat of that devious, twisted bastard, Tony” Metaphor. Juxtaposition. The violence of ‘shoving’ something metaphorically down someone’s throat ironically contrasts with the idea of ‘making magic’. Tony is representative of Antonio, Prospero’s brother in The Tempest. “It’s got a thunderstorm in it. And revenge. Definitely revenge” Summary. Felix tries to ‘sell’ The Tempest to the prison guards after they express disappointment that it doesn’t seem to have any fight scenes in it.
“Plus he’s a land stealer,” adds Red Coyote. “Suckin’ old white guy. He should be called Prospero Corp. Next thing he’ll discover oil on it, develop it, machine-gun everyone to keep the off it.” Historical Allusion. Connotation. Context. Tricolon. Think about the name of the character who delivers this piece of dialogue and the significance of this. How does this quote demonstrate the themes of colonialism and representation of the ‘other’? – Link to caliban and the effects colonialism has had on him. Colonialism still affects people today. People are still bitter towards their treatment now and then. Caliban wants revenge. Although Red Coyote is not actively seeking revenge, he is vengeful. “It is real… More than real. Hyper-real. You’ll see.” Foreshadowing. Felix can’t help but hint at his plan to exact revenge upon Tony and Sal. “The contact was courtesy 8Handz: each side could trust the other like a brother” Hyperbole. Colon. In this scene Felix organises through 8Handz to get drugs and needles that will allow him to sedate Sal and Tony, and/or make them hallucinate. How does this provide a parallel with the nature of Prospero’s powers in The Tempest?
